A “Fortunate Misfortune” is a blessing in disguise. In other words, bad happenings can be blessings in disguise.
The following are examples of how what at first seems like a very bad event, can actually turn out for the best.Project
A fire in the kitchen could result in the discovery of faulty wiring in the building and thus the building could be made safer.
Cutting your thumb could mean that you use the other hand and find that you are better with that hand for certain things.
If you get lost in a strange neighborhood, you might learn of good places you were unaware of, or you might meet an accommodating person to help you find your way and thereby acquire a friend.
Losing a game often becomes a blessing in disguise because it is a “wake-up call” concerning your overconfidence or the need to improve a particular skill.
Forgetting someone’s name could result in your taking a course in how to remember names, faces, and other important information, thus enabling you ever after to be a whiz at remembering names and faces.
If you drop your sandwich in the dirt, someone might give you part of hers or his, starting a friendship.
Losing a purse or a wallet might convince you that you should be more careful, hanging your habits when it comes to carrying valuables in the future.
Not making the soccer team could give you more free time for studying, and that might result in raising your grades.
Forgetting a loved one’s birthday is bad, but it might provoke you into giving the person a present you might not have given that is very appropriate and is highly appreciated.
Confusing one person for another could mean that your eyesight is defective, thus convincing you that you should get an eye examination.
Choking on a chicken bone could possibly result in someone’s making you cough it up with the Heimlich maneuver, thus giving you an incentive to learn that and other resuscitation techniques that will permit you to rescue others.
Falling down could be an indication of a problem with your inner ear, which might bring to light a medical problem that can be improved or cured.

Common Themes in Literature
The Great Journey
This follows a character or characters through a series of episodic adventures as they travel.
Loss of Innocence
Sometimes called the "coming of age story," this most commonly introduces an “innocent” character to the evil or complexity of the real/adult world
The Noble Sacrifice
The sacrifice can be for any reason except self --a loved one, an enemy, a group of people, the whole of humanity, a dog-- but the bottom line is that the protagonist sacrifices himself or herself in an effort to save others.
The Great Battle
This one is about people or groups of people in conflict. It is sometimes a good vs. evil story but not always. We often see this theme in horror or science fiction where the antagonist--a monster/creature/human/alien/computer/etc.-- is trying to kill the protagonist, who must fight to stay alive and/or defeat the antagonist. Sub-categories would be person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. society, person vs. technology and etc.
Love and Friendship
Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story, as is the story of Lancelot and Guinevere. The ending may be happy, sad, or bittersweet, but the main theme is romantic love.
The Capriciousness of Fate
Greek tragedies fit this category. Often, there is a major reversal of fortune. It could be from good-to-bad or from bad-to-good. Cinderella is a reversal of fortune story, but has a happy ending. The common element is that there is some force guiding the person’s life over which he or she has no control.
Revenge
The subject is obvious, but the outcome differs. Sometimes the outcome is good; sometimes the outcome is bad.
The Big Trick
In this one, someone or some group of people intentionally trick someone else.
The Big Mystery
Something unexplained happened and it is the protagonist’s job to find an explanation for it. Almost all police and detective dramas work within this form, as do most espionage and spy thrillers.
